To Our Friends in North Carolina…

Patti and I extend our whole-hearted and heartfelt congratulations to Thom Tillis upon his election as our stste’s next US Senator! We are ecstatic that North Carolina has chosen such a capable leader who will represent the conservative and traditional values we hold dear in the Old North State.

This vote, along with so many others across the nation and all the volunteer work that went into them, give each of us hope that America can recover from the past six years of a bad economy, weakened military, and challenges to the loss of religious freedoms. We have great days ahead of us in this next exciting chapter of our great nation!

I want to say a word about Susan Tillis. Aside from my own wife Patti, I don’t know that I have ever seen a spouse work as hard and with as much grace as Susan has on behalf of her husband. In spite of a grueling schedule, a never – ending barrage of media and constant chicken dinners which would fracture the toughest steel bar, Susan has proven herself to be absolutely unyielding and unflappable. Both she and Thom have delivered an irrepressible message of optimism that now resounds across the country. May God bless and keep Thom and Susan Tillis as they embark on this new mission. Our prayers are for them and their family. To paraphrase our state song: “May Heaven’s blessings attend them”. God bless the Tillis’s, the USA and the good old North State…forever!

  • Taxpayer Pledge

    Taxpayer Protection Pledge

President Obama’s proposed budget would raise taxes. To heal our nation, we must alleviate the tax burden of American families, eliminate wasteful spending, and fight for a Balanced Budget Amendment.

That is why I have signed a Taxpayer Protection Pledge with the Americans for Tax Reform. It’s time we stand up to the reckless actions of our administration.

If I get into too much debt, someone comes to repossess my car. If I don’t pay my power bill, my lights go out. How can our government incur trillions of dollars in debt without consequence?

Well, the consequences are coming, and they will unfairly burden our children and our children’s children. We absolutely must get our budget under control in order to defend the future of the United States. Congress can no longer resort to multiple short-term solutions that kick the can down the road and jeopardize our long-term future. If families and businesses plan ahead, why shouldn’t Congress?

Our Founding Fathers would have never fathomed the amount of debt and spending that the federal government is incurring. As your Senator, I will work tirelessly for a Balanced Budget Amendment. Until such an Amendment is added to our Constitution, I will work together with fiscally responsible members of both parties to reduce our budget deficits. I support ideas plans like the “Penny Plan,” which would reduce the deficit to zero within seven years. Why is this so hard?

Our deficits are not the result of too-low taxes, but of out-of-control spending. I would work to defend the taxpayer’s dollar by reforming and simplifying the tax code. At the same time, I support a line-item veto, and all efforts to eliminate wasteful spending (I hate waste!) Redundant and wasteful programs work against North Carolinians by stifling economic entrepreneurialism and opportunity.

As a mayor, I knew all too well how our city had to operate within a balanced budget while the federal government continued to push more and more rules and unfunded mandates down to the local municipalities. In the long term, the rate payers and tax payers are the ones who end up footing the bill. I will support the reduction of overly burdensome and unfunded federal control thrust upon our state and local governments.

Ted Alexander signs ObamaCare Repeal Pledge

View Official Press Release – PDF

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

February 3, 2014 — Ted Alexander, Republican candidate for United States Senate in
North Carolina, has signed The Repeal Pledge to undo ObamaCare.

“Mr. Alexander’s decision to take The Repeal Pledge shows voters that, when it comes
to health care, he gets it – he understands that ObamaCare is a government
infringement on our constitutional liberties, and he knows that it will lead to more
government and less freedom, will place government bureaucrats between doctors and
their patients, and will limit patients’ choice and control,” said Heather Higgins, President
& CEO of Independent Women’s Voice.

“One needs only to look at the millions of people who are seeing their health insurance
cancelled because of ObamaCare, when the President promised that if they liked their
plan they could keep it, to see how ObamaCare is hurting Americans,” Higgins added.
“And it will only get worse.”

The Repeal Pledge advocates not just repeal, but defunding, deauthorizing, and
dismantling the misleadingly-titled Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, passed in
early 2010. The Repeal Pledge was designed as a litmus test to help the American
public understand which candidates and office holders are serious about repeal, versus
those who claim to be but won’t actually take action.

“Mr. Alexander’s signature on the Pledge indicates that if elected, he would do
everything in his power to keep ObamaCare from adversely affecting the citizens of
North Carolina,” added Hadley Heath, health care policy analyst at Independent
    Women’s Voice.

Signers of the Repeal Pledge believe that this law cannot be “fixed” and that stopping its
implementation and ultimately repealing it are necessary first steps to ensure that
citizens and their doctors, not government bureaucrats, have choice and control over
their health care, and that medical care in our country becomes more affordable and
    available.

Response to The State of The Union

I found this speech to be utterly lacking in either inspiration or in new ideas. This tired speech failed miserably to put any “union” in the State of the Union Address. It was one of the most partisan SOTU addresses I can remember. Virtually everything that the President mentioned were things that he is going to do on his own. No unity there. No extended hand.

Throughout the speech, while telling the country how bad things are, he only served to reinforce the inability of his economic policies to improve the economy over the last five years. He actually indicted his own administration because he has had five years now, and we are in no better shape than we were when he started. He inasmuch said so. It is especially ironic that the energy strategy that he said “is working” is, in actuality, based solely on private initiatives on privately owned land. Neither the President nor his policies have had anything to do with this growth in our energy production. In fact, he wants to tax fossil fuels even more -which will discourage more production and raise prices at the gas pump and for home heating.

In the world, according to President Obama’s address, the only time that innovative research, education of our children, or job creation will occur is through federal intervention and efforts. In addition, according to the President, jobs and employers can only be connected through the efforts of the government, when in actuality what we need is for the government to get out from between employers and job seekers. To his credit, the President was able to find and highlight the one person in the country that has had a positive experience with the Affordable Health Care Act. But he was loudly silent about the 5 million plus Americans who have lost their health insurance directly due to Obamacare.

I heard more of the same; More “standards,” more “protection” more intervention. All of this means that we should expect even more job killing and regulatory policies in almost every aspect of our lives, and apparently without any input from Congress. The “savings” that he refers to in the tax code only means that he intends for the federal government to keep all of any additional monies raised by closing loopholes instead of rebating that money back to the American taxpayer.

The introduction and story of Sergeant First Class Cory Remsburg could have served in and of itself as the entire State of the Union address. His stirring story of courage and bravery gives us hope and unity of purpose that the President is incapable of doing. Sergeant Remsburg represents what is the absolute best of America. We are indebted to him and the many others who have sacrificed for our country.

Ted Alexander Announces Candidacy for US Senate Primary to be held May 6th

For immediate release: January 13, 2014

Ted Alexander, former Mayor of Shelby and a native of Morganton, today announced his official candidacy for the May 6, 2014 Republican primary for the US Senate seat currently held by Sen. Kay Hagan. Alexander made the announcement at the Shelby City Hall with family, friends and supporters present in the Council Chambers where he presided as mayor for 8 years.

“My reason for running in the May 6th primary for my party’s nomination can be summed up in the phrase ‘to support and defend the Constitution of the United States’ and to serve the people of North Carolina. The phrase ‘to support and defend…’ comes straight out of the sacred oath of office taken by all U.S. Senators.Ted Alexander announces his candidacy for US Senate

With my 35 years worth of experience in serving the public in various capacities, I feel called by God and compelled by an urgent sense of duty to offer everything I have to support a better way of life and create opportunities throughout our state and country in order to benefit all our citizens.

After 50 years of the ‘War on Poverty’ we are at a critical juncture in our state and nation’s history, where we now find that the very programs that were intended to help those less fortunate in our country are now literally hurting those very same people, and in fact have now begun to hurt many others as well by taking away their dignity, initiative and the entrepreneurial spirit that has made our country great. My desire is to offer whatever life experiences that I have accumulated over the years, combined with a socially and economically conservative philosophy, in order to repeal Obamacare and bring federal spending and programs under control through a balanced Budget Amendment.

I am running to support all of the people in North Carolina who are being hurt at the hands of an insatiable and ever greedy federal government whose high taxes, the nightmare of Obamacare, and wasteful spending now have most Americans literally working in involuntary servitude for a virtually unaccountable federal bureaucracy. I want to work to create the most powerful anti-poverty strategy ever invented and that is– job creation. More and more  our federal government is stifling the generation of wealth under the false assumption that those who create the jobs in our country are somehow the enemy and need to be punished, when in reality all of policies adhering to that line of thinking actually punish those who really need the jobs.  Ever increasing regulations place an undue burden upon our own state and local governments which in turn hurts our citizens at the local level. I will support efforts to reduce the size and scope of our federal government and get it out of the way so that we can re-unleash the most powerful economic engine that the world has ever known.”

While mayor, Alexander was credited with having worked tirelessly to bring down the city’s crime rate: support local economic development initiatives such as the Foothills Commerce Center and the newly opened Earl Scruggs Center; and engaging citizens, civic organizations and churches in neighborhood and community development. “I will bring this same work ethic and energy to the office of senator and emphasize the importance of constituent service for our citizens.” Alexander remarked.

In addition to serving as Mayor, Alexander has served the state in various capacities over the years including President of the North Carolina Downtown Development Association, the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency’s Housing Partnership, The North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center, The UNC-Charlotte Alumni Association and Foundation Boards, Rotary, and many other organizations including New Wilderness Adventures ministry.  He is married to his wife of 30 years, the former Patti Powell of Asheboro and they have 2 children. Ted is a member, deacon and Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church of Shelby.
